The importance of preventive dental care

Preventive dental care is the lowest-cost, highest-impact thing you can do for your long-term oral health. Two cleanings a year and a daily home routine prevent most of the problems that bring patients in for emergency visits.

The components

  • Brushing twice a day, two minutes each time, with a soft-bristled brush.
  • Flossing once a day, even when it feels unnecessary.
  • Cleanings every six months, or every three to four months if you have a history of gum disease.
  • X-rays at the frequency your dentist recommends based on your risk profile.
